Genesis Fermin (She/Her)
Armed with a guitar, drums and an enigmatic, mournful voice, Genesis Fermin wades against the currents of today’s generation of singer-songwriters. She is not your chain outlet of musical treats but an unusual singer-songwriter and musician. She is all about well crafted songs that reveal her ambitions, doubts and regrets. Her melodies reflect her soul, her words are snapshots of her life, and her vision is more her exploration of what she sees and what she hears and most importantly what she touches.
A musical polyamorist, Genesis holds up much of the musical world in the East Bay and, when not performing solo, she generously bestows her talents to Easy Queen, MILF!, all-female Judas Priest worshipers The Halford Wives, Invincible Vacuum Cleaner Co, and Oakland’s new darling duet, Power Snatch, with Willa Mamet. Genesis also collaborates and performs with fellow singer-songwriters and beloved music friends in the Bay Area music community.
Genesis has made her mark in the ether with her heartbreaking interpretations of David Bazan’s (Pedro The Lion) songs, that has earned praises from the artist himself, describing Genesis as an artist who “is deadly serious. In response to the panic surrounding Covid-19, shelter in place in California and the sudden loss of shows booked in 2020, Genesis co-founded a monthly virtual event called I Need Space: A Livestream Queer Music Festival with Willa Mamet, Briget Boyle and Makenzie Burt. As of August, I Need Space has featured thirty-seven multi-genre and multi-generational artists over the last six months, garnering over 50k views on Facebook, live streaming to multiple platforms (Facebook Live, Twitch and Youtube), and is fully accessible to all audiences through ASL interpretation and live captioning.
Genesis is currently working on her debut album, produced by Gina Villalobos, and will be released by Christa Hillhouse’s record label, Sharpsong Music, in 2020.
Her breadth of work is vast but poignant and perceptive at the same time. Come along on the journey easily enjoyed not easily forgotten.
